If RoseBud has a patron saint for writing, it would be Charles Osgood. No surprise there, but many years ago, before the bud was barely on the vine, we got to watch Charles at work in the CBS News newsroom, cranking out “Newsbreak” and then its successor, “The Osgood Files.” And Charles Osgood’s first collection of those elegantly told stories became his first published book, entitled “Nothing Could be Finer than a Crisis that is Minor in the Morning.”
And it’s that sentiment that leads us to tell you about this Commentary from Larry Mendte.
You see Charles was gifted with not only writing well, but also delivering his tales with a pitch perfect voice. And he could take a serious word like “crisis” and bend it, seemingly to his will.
We hope that when President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris (who appears here in Larry’s Commentary!) and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki watch Larry’s Commentary on the Immigration Crisis they are in the middle of, they take to heart that words matter, and substituting “crisis” with the word “condition” doesn’t minimize the serious and urgent humanitarian problem going on presently at the Mexican – United States border. Words matter. And, “Nothing Could be Finer than a Condition that is Minor” just doesn’t have the same ring, and would never be a best-seller. Please watch Larry’s take on all this (spoiler alert: there’ll be no more mention of Charles Osgood or his book!) and see if you agree or disagree. Then let Larry know at @mendte. As always, thank you for watching RoseBud. And please do share!
