JWYTYKE: The History of Juneteenth

You may have heard “Juneteenth” mentioned a lot recently. The national holiday has become more well known in recent weeks as Black Lives Matter protests continue across the country. The day was brought into the spotlight even more after President Donald Trump scheduled his first rally amid the pandemic for June, 19th (Juneteenth) in Tulsa, Oklahoma. President Trump has since moved the date of the rally, “out of respect” for the holiday.

With Juneteenth making headlines, it’s become increasingly apparent that many American’s don’t actually know what the holiday is, or what it represents. In this RoseBud video, we explain why Juneteenth is a pivotal moment in African American history, as well as today.
