It was opening night on Thursday for the Medford Rogues at Harry & David Field, hosting the Fresno Athletics. Fans waited for the gates to open for the first Rogues game since 2019 due to COVID-19.
A sacrifice fly in the second inning score a run for the Athletics, marking the first run of the season against the Rogues.
Medford would respond two innings later with runners on second and third. Jake Gentry slapped a hard grounder into right field, both runners came around to score, and Gentry found himself on second with a 2 RBI double.
Things would then be quiet for a few innings before Medford scored three in the bottom of the sixth and the Athletics responded with six runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead.
Medford would score a run in the seventh and eighth to tie the game up, and Jake Gentry would win the game for the Rogues with a walk-off two-run homer to help Medford grab the victory on Opening Night.
Thursday was just the first of a three-game series between Medford and Fresno that finishes on Saturday. Then the Rogues hit the road for two games before returning home to play a majority of the regular season games in Medford.
The regular season runs until the end of July.
