On This Day in Music in 1975, Gino Vannelli became the first white singer to appear on Soul Train, performing the song “People Gotta Move.” Moving to 1984, Ethel Merman succumbs to brain cancer at the age of 76. We go back to 1979… Donna Summer’s “Last Dance” earns two Grammys. One for Best Female R&B Vocal, and another for Best R&B song. And it was on this day in 1967, that “seven music students from DePaul University formed a rock ensemble called “The Big Thing.” Soon they changed their name to “Chicago Transit Authority,” and then, simply, to “Chicago.”
